Mesaplexx, an innovative start-up company specialising in developing products and intellectual property in electromagnetic engineering and high performance filters, today announces the launch of xCube™.  This revolutionary radio filter technology has the capability to radically improve the performance of active antenna systems (AASs), enabling increases in network capacity of up to 65 per cent.

AASs are capable of significantly increasing base station site efficiency and performance, dramatically improving network capacity and coverage.  However, until now a number of technical obstacles have prevented AASs from achieving their true performance potential, all linked to one of the technology’s smallest components – the radio filter. The current filters used with active antennas create significant loss, detracting from the benefits that active antennas can bring. 

xCube, Mesaplexx’s high performance radio filter technology, eradicates these problems.  The xCube is a cool running, low loss, high isolation filter that improves sensitivity and handles much more power.  These benefits, combined with its compact size, enables AAS vendors to deliver 50% more power output for the same input, delivering significant increases in range and capacity. With more power output and less heat being generated multi-band and multi-technology solutions can come within reach.

Mesaplexx CEO, Mark Bole, has been involved in the communications industry for over 25   years and he brings considerable experience with mobile operators and other key players in Mesaplexx’s business environment.

Mark’s first degree was in Electronics Engineering and he has since gained several business qualifications including an MBA with distinctions in Innovation Management and Corporate Strategy.

Mark has held a number of senior management roles within Nokia and managed multi-discipline, multi-country engineering teams including filter and RF design. For the last 20 years he has been responsible for building commercial traction and driving business growth in both large and small businesses across more than 30 countries in Europe, Asia, Australasia, North and South America.

VP Commercial – Peter Young:

Peter Young, VP Commercial, is responsible for all commercial activity including the business development, sales and marketing functions. He is the primary relationship manager for the Mobile Network Equipment Vendors.  Since joining Mesaplexx in 2010, Peter has been instrumental in steering the corporate strategy towards the xCube and active antenna systems. 

With a career focused on telecommunications, Peter has held a number of international senior positions including: Group Sales and Marketing Director at Aircom International; EMEA Sales and Marketing Director at Infotech; and a number of operational roles within the British Army and the Royal Signals. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an honours degree in Physics and has an MBA from the OU Business School.

Chief of Technology – Steven Cooper:

Steven Cooper is the Development Engineering Manager at Mesaplexx.  He joined the company in 2007, having previously worked as a research fellow at The University of Queensland for 5 years, and prior to that as a research scientist at CSIRO for 2 years.  He holds a PhD in physics from The University of Queensland.

Steven heads the technical product development team at Mesaplexx, where he manages the development of new technologies and their application to new products.  In this role he is responsible for delivering innovative solutions under tight schedules from a multidisciplinary team.

VP Business Operations - Brian Hurley:

Brian is responsible  for the management of the Intellectual Property and the Contract Manufacturing at Mesaplexx. His background is in outsourcing and high volume manufacturing, product & process development and quality systems.

He joined Mesaplexx in 2010, having spent 17 years in various senior roles in the Semiconductor industry in Asia,  including R&D, quality and outsourcing.

Brian holds a MSc degree in Applied Physics from Dublin City University and is a Quality Management Systems Lead Auditor.

CFO – Adrian Jones:

Adrian has extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of finance, start-ups, fund raising, and turnarounds achieved through assignments in software, telecoms (fixed and mobile) and in hospitality. He has been a board director for companies in the UK and Europe and acts as a consultant advisor in operational and finance due diligence related to M&A activities.

Before joining Mesaplexx, Adrian has worked at KPMG London, Boole and Babbage UK, IntelliCorp Europe, Intergraph UK, PSI Network, Infonet, Via Networks and Connectivity.

Adrian is an associate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Since 2007, Mesaplexx, backed by CM Capital and Southern Cross Venture Partners, has been developing products and intellectual property in electromagnetic engineering, high temperature superconductors, ceramic, substrate technologies, mathematical modelling and and RF filters.

There are a myriad of different solutions to help operators maximise capacity, offering performance improvements from a few percent, to over fifty percent, but there is no one ‘magic bullet’ that can deliver the required expansion in network capacity.

Solutions such as Wi-Fi offloading, femtocells, data capping, additional sites (densification) and LTE all have different challenges, pros and cons.

But no strategy can ignore the next iteration of access network technologies – LTE and LTE-A – which delivers real, meaningful, additional capacity on new frequency bands. It is critical that operators ensure that LTE is implemented in a way that maximises its potential.

The capacity of LTE can be enhanced by up to 65% by the use of active antennas. The technological barriers to adoption have been overcome, largely due to the arrival of high performance miniaturized components.

The current filters used with active antennas create significant loss, detracting from the benefits that active antennas can bring, while less lossy, ceramic filters have remained stubbornly large – more suited to a location at the bottom of the mast. Traditional filters are not doing justice to the new active antenna technologies and are diluting the unquestioned benefits that they bring.

To date, the barriers to widespread adoption of active antenna systems include:

•    Active antenna system capacity is being strangled by radio filter performance
•    Excessive heat, causing reliability issues 
•    The inability to deliver a multi-band capability
